The railway opened to steam in 1859, seen here running above Cheesewring Farm. The granite setts on which the rails were fixed remain to this day, though the rails themselves were lifted in 1917.

Three early 0-6-0 steam engines hauled trains from Looe docks to Minions village high on the moor and then out to Kilmar Tor granite quarry three miles further up this line. Here we see one of those engines, ‘Caradon’ hauling coal to Sharptor coppermine just visible ahead. It will then go on with now-empty wagons to Kilmar quarry, picking up granite blocks to take back to Looe docks and bound for places like London.
