Gerry Hillman Landscape Prints – In the Derbyshire Hills
I painted this after visits to the Peak District. In Victorian times wealthy mill owners bought large tracts of the Derbyshire hills & built big houses and walled gardens with echoes of classical architecture. They now lie in ruins, taken over by the beech trees, tall soft grasses, & rhododendron thickets originally planted to embroider the old drives from the lodges to the big home. This is such a landscape of broken walls, beech woods & an overgrown drive above the Goyt Valley, reclaimed by nature.
