Gerry Hillman Landscape Prints – On a hard winter’s day
Sheep are looking for hay in the fading light of a snowbound landscape in mid-winter.
In the late ’60’s elms were an ubiquitous and emblematic tree of rural England. As a youth I loved to draw and paint them. It was the tree of choice for rooks and crows which nested in its fine branches. Every church seemed to have its elm rookery. Within five years nearly all the elms were lost to the ravages of the elm bark beetle. It was sad to lose this iconic tree from the English landscape. I painted this as a memory of the lost elms of Middle England.
