The  machair is the flat land that runs along the west coast of the outer Hebridean isles. Millenia of seashell deposits have created the soil of this terrain. In spring and early summer it is transformed by a rich covering of wild flowers. This was on mid-summer’s day looking east across the machair towards the hills of South Uist.
